Cathodic Launches Low-Cost Anti-Fouling System for Submerged Pumps
01-09-2011
Cathodic Protection has completed the development of a new anti-fouling system to protect submerged pumps from marine growth. A derivative of the proven Cuprion™ anti-fouling system, this latest version is designed as a direct replacement for existing hypochlorite and other chlorine based anti fouling systems used on offshore platforms and jetties.

Corrosion problems and poor reliability are issues which are often reported by operators of chlorine based anti fouling systems. The Cuprion system in contrast is non-corrosive and requires no routine maintenance. Protection to the pump is provided by copper and aluminium ions which are generated by the electrolysis of solid electrodes. The electrodes are consumable items which are conventionally fitted to the pump or sea water intake.
Retrofitting a Cuprion system has historically involved lifting the pump so that the electrode could be fitted below the pump intake. This may cause operational difficulties in taking the pump offline, or it may not be practical to fit a Cuprion electrode below the pump.
To address these issues Cathodic has developed a deck mounted anti-fouling system, which can use the existing delivery pipework from a chlorine anti-fouling system. This latest version from Cathodic is known as the CAnDU system. It features a modular design which can be expanded to suit different pump capacities, allowing manufacturing costs to be minimised. The result is an affordable system which will provide complete anti fouling protection to the pump and significant savings to the operator.
Cathodic Protection manufactures a standard range of Cuprion anti-fouling systems to suit all NFPA 20 rated fire pumps. Custom designed solutions are also available for all pumping applications.

DCVG Equipment Available From Cathodic
25-03-2010
CPCL are proud to announce the launch of their range of DCVG test equipment, accessories and training programmes. Product data sheets are available in the catalogue section
DCVG is a survey method developed to determine and evaluate the condition of pipeline coatings. As the coating is the prime corrosion defense mechanism it is important to be able to assess its effectiveness particularly in situations where the status of the secondary corrosion prevention system (the Cathodic Protection system) is in question.
A common method uses a highly accurate and multi ranged centre zero voltmeter in conjunction with current interrupters to measure voltage gradients in the soil along the pipeline route. Localised changes in measured gradients indicate increased current flow and by deduction this usually means a coating defect is present. The accuracy of the instrument and the skill of the operator allows detailed investigation of the location and the collected data can be interpreted to categorise many defects along the route and prioritise on coating repairs.
